Name: Disney's Aladdin (1994)
License: Demo Author: Virgin Interactive Category: Sidescrolling Description: This demo version of the wonderfully animated game based on the 1992 Disney movie Aladdin (sometimes misspelled Alladin) gives you a taste of what the full game offers. You of course play Aladdin, and you must platform your way through many levels based on scenes from the iconic movie, including the bazaar, caves, and palace. As you might expect from a Disney-based game, the graphics, sounds, and MOD-like music are great, and the controls are responsive and work well for this type of game. It doesn't feel like a forced movie-based cash-in game, but rather a natural extension of the world created by the popular movie. Install command: $> sudo pacman -S dosbox-aladdin
Name: Mario & Luigi (1994)
License: Freeware Author: Wiering Software Category: Sidescrolling Description: Mario & Luigi is a clone of the popular Super Mario Bros game for the NES. The game has an interesting backstory, where the developer Mike Wiering made the game as a programming exercise, and a beta version somehow leaked out and even was taken and sold by another guy! (You can download this alternate version in the "extra files" area above.) The actual game, titled Mario & Luigi later released by Wiering (obviously with no official license from the "Big N") offers decent gameplay and six levels to complete. The engine was obviously re-used for later games such as Charlie the Duck, Sint Nicolaas, and the most obvious being Super Angelo! Anywho, this game is generally fun to play, and the executable is only 57k! (The Turbo Pascal 6.0/5.5 source code is available on the Wiering Software website as well.) Install command: $> sudo pacman -S dosbox-mario
Name: Montezuma's Revenge (1984)
License: Abandonware Author: Parker Brothers Category: Sidescrolling Description: Montezuma's Revenge is an abandoned DOS action game set in South America, developed by Parker Brothers, designed by Robert Jaeger and published by BCI Software in 1984. Install command: $> sudo pacman -S dosbox-monte
Name: Prehistorik 2 (1993)
License: Demo Author: Titus Interactive Category: Sidescrolling Description: Prehistorik 2 is a platforming game with simple controls and gameplay, but a lot of polish. You are a caveman and need to bonk enemies with your club and collect everything you see for POINTS. The graphics are well-done and the game controls quite smoothly, with the exception being that instead of scrolling smoothly, the levels scroll in screen-sized increments. It's a bit disorienting but not game-breaking. Install command: $> sudo pacman -S dosbox-prehistorik2 |
